The Story

Painted with energy and clarity of light, ‘Golden Gorse and Cornish Seals, Godrevy Lighthouse’ captures one of Cornwall’s most loved coastal scenes in full spring brilliance. The cliffs above Gwithian are alive with vivid yellow gorse, their sculptural forms framing a sweeping view across turquoise water towards the iconic white tower of Godrevy Lighthouse.

This original painting was inspired by a walk on the first day of spring along the cliffs at Gwithian. The artist picnicked on the headland, listened to the wind moving through the gorse, watched the shifting colours of sea and sky, and took in the sounds of seabirds and waves below. It was a day filled with light, space and renewal, and that sense of fresh seasonal energy runs through every brushstroke.

Below the cliff edge, a colony of Cornish grey seals rests along the shoreline while others glide through the clear Atlantic waters. Their dark forms create a gentle rhythm across the sea, echoing the movement of the tide and the Cornish seagulls circling overhead. A small group of figures stand on the headland, quietly observing, reflecting that shared experience of simply pausing and absorbing the life of the coast.

The composition draws the eye from the bold foreground gorse, through richly painted cliffs and shimmering water, towards the lighthouse set against an expansive blue sky. The layering of greens, ultramarine and sea-glass blues creates a vivid sense of coastal light that feels unmistakably Cornwall in early spring.

Godrevy Lighthouse has long inspired artists drawn to the drama and beauty of this stretch of coastline. Here, John Dyer brings his celebrated use of colour and pattern to this historic landmark, transforming a familiar view into a vibrant celebration of wildlife, landscape and the awakening of a new season.

At 12 x 12 inches, this jewel-like original painting offers a highly collectable opportunity to acquire a unique Cornish coastal scene by one of Cornwall’s best-loved artists. It brings optimism, light and the restorative spirit of the Atlantic into a home, while representing a meaningful and enduring investment in original Cornish art.
